The 2nd Rally at the Jeju Provincial Office with Slogan: “Withdraw the plan for the Jeju for-profit hospital, acquire the land for the Greenland International Medical Center to make it public hospital”
Protest Action in front of the Greenland International Medical Center
The KHMU protested against the opening of the Jeju for-profit hospital at the Jeju Provincial Office at 11:00 AM on 27th.
At the 4th resolution rally, the Pan-National Movement Center urged to nullify the Jeju for-profit hospital and make it a public hospital
The resolution rally was hosted by the Pan-National Movement Center against For-Profit Hospital and organized by the KHMU and KCTU, joined by around 300 KHMU members and about 100 of those concerned with the Jeju People’s Movement Center.
“ All people oppose! Withdraw the for-profit hospital! Nullify the approval of those problematic for-profit hospitals! Let’s stop for-profit hospitals for enhanced public nature of public healthcare service!” they chanted.
The KHMU President Na stated, “The KHMU clearly expressed our position against for-profit hospitals here on January 3. We are not alone in this fight. We work together with the Pan-National Movement Center to publicize the problems of for-profit hospitals, conducting the one million signature campaign. The struggle goes beyond Jeju to Seoul and to every corner of the nation.”
“The Greenland Group filed a lawsuit against the Jeju Province and many legal experts forecast the Jeju local government will lose. Even in the case that the Greenland Group loses, they will file a lawsuit against the national government based on the Korea-China FTA articles. If it happens, our tax will be used to compensate them. Like this, one governor has been ruining everything, bringing a strange case of fraud to people. But, the central government and the Blue House stand by idly. This is about people’s life and health. And it can be grown to an international conflict. The government should take an active part right away albeit already somewhat belated and acquire the for-profit hospital as a public one,” added President Na. After the rally, the KHMU moved to the Jeju Greenland International Medical Center and took a protest action. Around 300 union members surrounded the hospital in a form of human chain for about 30 minutes.
From February 11 to March 4. the Pan-National Movement Center has conducted a sit-in overnight protest before the Blue House, urging the central government to intervene in the withdrawal of the for-profit hospital.
The Jeju Provincial Government permitted opening of the Greenland Medical Center on December 5. According to the medical law, a hospital licensed for opening should start the business within 90 days unless specified otherwise. The Greenland Medical Center, however, has yet to take patients as of March 4. In that case, as per the law, the permission can be canceled. The KHMU held a press conference urging the cancellation in front of the Blue House on March 4.
