[KHMU News Release. July 25, 2008] KHMU to Stage a Protest against Privatization of the Medical Sector

- After hosting a rally at Bosingak (Bosin Belfry) in Jongno, central Seoul at 2 p.m., July 25, KHMWU is to make a protest visit to the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Family Affairs and deliver the Major Five Demand to the Government.   

- Various programs, including performances against the medical and health sector   privatization are scheduled at the rally. 

1. At 2:00 p.m., July 25, the Korea Health and Medical Workers' Union(KHMU, President Hong Myeong-ok) is to host a rally, joined by 300 union officers of the capital area, requesting the government to get away with the policy on medical privatization, now that the planned industry-wide general strike is delayed to stage as the industrial negotiation on the numerous controversial issues mostly reached an agreement thanks to the settlement efforts of the National Labor Relations Commission and 28 hour-long marathon negotiation.  

2. In order to secure the public nature of medical and health services and to uphold the citizens' right to health, KHMWU also schedules to urge the government to immediately accept 'the Major Five Demands for All-out Abolishment of the Medical Sector Privatization' and abolish its policy on medical privatization, part of which is the controversial government's permit for the construction of a profit-seeking hospital in Jeju. In addition, KHMWU is to declare [the Joint-Statement against the Catering of Imported U.S. Beef to Hospitals] agreed among employers and employees of 50 hospitals, followed by requesting the government to come up with an administration-level guideline banning U.S. beef at hospitals. Further, KHMU is to urge that considering the agreed items on industry-level labor and management negotiations, the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Family Affairs should take special actions for medical institution evaluation system improvement and more employment in hospitals of which process is participated by both labor and management by organizing a TFT and taking measures for improving relevant laws.
