KHMU INFO <3> March 14, 2017

On March 10, the constitutional court decided to impeach President Park Geun-hye.

The court’s decision is a people’s victory and the beginning of a new Korea

At 11: 30 a.m. on March 10, the eight judges of the constitutional court made a unanimous decision to fire then-President Park Geun-hye. When the decision was made, the parliament had suspended Park as president, and its impeachment bill had been submitted to the constitutional court. At the national assembly, 299 out of 300 lawmakers voted and 234(78.3%) supported the impeachment bill.

Approximately 156.4 million people gathered at the weekend candlelight vigils over the past several months. And on Saturday, March 11, “the People’s Action for Park Geun-hye Out” organized the 20th round of the Pan-Korea Day of People’s Action and celebrated the citizens’ victory. Over half a million citizens attended the rally at the Gwanghwamoon Square and shouted: “Lies can never defeat truth, truth never sinks, we will never give up.”

The Korean Health and Medical Workers’ Union announced a celebratory statement on March 10th as follows:

Today’s decision made at the constitutional court resulted from the candlelight vigils and persistent struggles to create a new democratic republic nation in which 99% of the people are free to pursue happiness. Such struggles created this victorious civic revolution, which will be celebrated for so long in Korea’s history. We have braved the freezing cold in the middle of winter and filled the square with victorious voice for democracy and justice. Now, the new gate of hope has swung wide-open for people. Korea is ready to march towards a new future. Finally, spring has arrived with hope.

Now, the grand march has begun to make a nation that functions as a true nation.  To complete this march, we should work tirelessly to investigate and punish Park Geun-hye, Cho Soon-sil and their pals in huge chaebol conglomerates. We should push for a sweeping reform that frees people to pursue happiness.

The corrupt president’s ouster is a new beginning for a  Korea. We just completed the impeachment struggle. And now, we start the struggle for sweeping social reform.

With this proud victory, we, the KHMU, will gain momentum to find the truth in any healthcare gates(scandals), to remove harmful practices in the healthcare sector, and to strengthen the public nature of healthcare services. In addition, to complete the last stage of the candlelight revolution for a new Korea, we will stand united with the Korean people in any fight at the work place and the square.

“Today’s victory is the victory of the grand civic revolution and of truth and democracy. I deeply thank all of our comrades, brothers and sisters of trade unions worldwide for their warm and support for our struggles against injustice,” said the KHMU President Yoo Ji-hyun.

According to the constitution, Korea must elect a new President within 60 days. Therefore, the election will be held in early May, rather than in December this year, which was the original schedule if Park was not impeached. Two candidates from the current opposition party, the Minju Party of Korea, have been approved by people, 40% and 20% each. Considering all, it is highly likely that Korea will see a change in the political party presiding over the government.
