Beginning on February 26, the Korean Health and Medical Workers’ Union (KHMU) will celebrate the 20th anniversary of its founding Korea’s first industry-based union.

The Korean Health and Medical Workers Union (KHMU, President Na Soon-ja) organized Korea’s first industry-based union in 1998. On its 20th founding anniversary, starting on February 26th, many events such as a commemorative ceremony, a debate forum, an international seminar and the Annual Congress will take place.

At 1:30 pm on the 26th, the “New Bargaining System for Decent Work Forum” will be held at CCMM Building located near the Yeouinaru Station in Yeouido.

Ahead of the forum, KHMU will introduce its recently published booklet to celebrate the 20th founding anniversary of the healthcare-industry union.

At 5:00 pm, the commemorative ceremony will take place at Spaceshare, followed by the celebration dinner. The KHMU congress members, President Kim Myeong-hwan of the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions (KCTU), leaders from every walk of life in Korea and union leaders from abroad will join the ceremony. In this venue, awards and plaques will be presented to model union members, contributors and those who deserve to be appreciated. What makes it even more special is that KHMU’s seniors who have led the labor movement for 3 decades will also attend the event.

On the 27th, also at the Spaceshare, the International Seminar honoring the 20th Founding Anniversary of the Industrial Union will be held, joined by labor unionists from six countries and international trade unions, including Germany’s ver.di, the NNU from the US, Australia’s nurses and midwives’ union, the Medical Workers’ Association in Japan, the Hong Kong Hospital Workers’ Union, the Public Service International and the UNI Global Union. The seminar will continue until 6:00 pm.

The seminar’s program will be as follows: session 1 – decent work, working hours and the night shift in the healthcare sector, session 2 – decent work and wages in the healthcare sector, session 3 – the development of decent healthcare job indicators, session 4 – decent jobs, worker’s participation in the business management of the company and the social dialogue. And as the last program, the Seoul Tripartite Declaration on Decent Jobs in the Healthcare Sector will be introduced and adopted.

At 8:30 am on the 28th, the Annual Congress will take place in Hanhwa Center with a major focus on campaign and project assessment reporting and approval of the financial settlement of 2017, 2018 campaign plans’ presentation and budget approval, the election of the national committee members (sent by KCTU) and the Congress members, discussion of other matters and adoption of the resolution.

KHMU set the week starting on February 20, as the 20th Founding Anniversary Week. During the two weeks, various events including photo exhibitions, banner hangings, union members’ proof shot taking (taking a photo as a proof of attendance), rice cake sharing, gift giving to union members and more will go on, organized by different KHMU branches.

On January 11, KHMU held a temporary Congress to recognize incoming and outgoing executive divisions. The former President Yoo Ji-hyun will continue to serve at KHMU as the President of the Committee to Strengthen the Public Nature of Medical Services.
