The Korean Medical and Health Workers’ Union (KHMU) announced that it would organize the KHMU Gran March event to raise awareness about safe hospitals and labor-respected workplaces, together with the 200,000 Citizens’ Petition campaign.

Around 3,000 KHMU members were gathered at the Seoul Railway Station Square and joined the KHMU Grand March for safe hospitals and labor-respected workplaces. During the walk to the Gwanghwamoon Square from the central railway station, they campaigned: ▲ against four evil cultures of forced free labor, bullying, fake certification, atypical jobs ▲ for enactment of the law on staffing needs in the health and medical sector ▲ for increased health insurance coverage and reduced worries about health cost of working families and ▲ for normalization of the industry-level collective bargaining

The KHMU President Na Soon-ja noted in her opening remarks, “This year saw as high as 38% of newly employed nurses quit their jobs within one year after hired. Even a nurse committed suicide. We should not accept the malpractices of the hospital management, which led nurses to resignation and even death.”

In the <Health Workers’ Declaration on Safe Hospital and Respect for Labor>, the union members who joined the Grand March committed to successfully completing campaigns ▲ against long and extended working hours and forced free labor ▲ human rights violation like verbal and physical abuses ▲ for a better certification system on medical institutions, which is reflective of reality ▲ for regularization  of irregular jobs ▲ for additional 500,000 jobs in the health and medical sector ▲ for 80% increase in the health insurance coverage ▲ for public medical service improvement by reopening of Jinju Medical Center,  government’s acquisition of the Baptist Hospital, and successful opening of Seongnam Citizens Medical Center against the law on reduced minimum wage ▲ for improvement in the labor policy and institutionalization of industry-level collective bargaining, and ▲ the 200,000 Citizens’ 4 Out Petition Campaign.

The in-field leadership members’ appealing speeches also gained attention at the rally. A nurse said, “We need staffing to ensure neither patients nor employees are sick and it is time for the government to act.” Another nurse noted, “The number of patients per nurse in Korea records 3 to 4 times more than in advanced countries. Under the circumstances, around 70% of nurses is thinking of resignation, and 30% leave the job indeed.” She also added that such problems as employees’ being sick in hospitals must be corrected.

At the rally, the in-field union members showed dance performance and other performing art, gaining a big round of applause.

Meanwhile, the KHMU’s ex-President Yoo Ji-hyun who has been receiving anti-cancer treatment following cancer surgery visited the rally to encourage union members. Amidst of warm cheers and applause, she greeted the members. She is expected to work as the chair of the committee on strengthening the public nature of health and medical services.

The KHMU plans to conduct a 200,000 citizens’ petition campaign for safe hospital without medical accidents intensively for a month at the Blue House official website.
